Here the Christmas decorations are going up, the carols are playing, preparations are being made for a (rather last minute) Christmas pudding and... it's snowing, so no school!

This is just a short entry to share some photos and Christmas excitement, but one other thing I'd like to share is that I've just signed a petition begun by Desmond Tutu for the release of Nobel Prize winning Chinese political prisoner Liu Xiaobo and his wife in China. Every ten years the Chinese leadership changes over, and this occurred just a few weeks ago, making this a promising time for change! Please support this petition, which currently has 357,080 signatures, by Clicking Here. It is aiming to reach half a million, and the number of signatures is literally going up by the second.

Poor Elena was very sick yesterday, so I got to stay home as well. It wasn't snowing, in fact and the last remnants of the snow from last week remained, but Giampiera and I happily passed the day making little angels to hang up in the house, while Elena slept. Again today, thanks to this wonderful snow that is lying about 20cm deep on everything and in big piles in the street and carries on falling, I'm at home! I just can't explain fully what simple, wonderful happiness I feel when it's snowing. I think later I'll go out and make a snowman.

I've finally got Elena's photos off of her, so I've uploaded quite a few new photos but I won't put them all in this entry (if you want to see them there's a link to 'more photos...' on the right).

I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas...

Yes, that's right - we've had snow!!!

On Friday afternoon, when I wrote my last entry it was snowing. It kept on snowing into the evening, and in no time at all everything had a beautiful white coating over it. I was out in the garden without a coat catching snowflakes on my tongue and trying to photograph them. I so hope that this col weather will stay - I'm dreaming of a white Christmas!

On Saturday, Laura and Riccardo, who are some close friends of the Barcella family took me to the little mountain town of Selvino. This trip was already planned before the snow, but we were very lucky that it had snowed before we went there, as it was absolutely stunningly picturesque. (Lots of adverbs and adjectives, I know - but the situation necessitates it!) We took a funicular from Albino, which is only 20 mins drive from home up to Selvino, which is at 1000m. The Funicular offered wonderful views over the mountains and the various little towns and right to Milan, but when we arrived Selvino was a beautiful sight in itself. As it was the feast of the Immaculate Conception, we first went to Mass in Selvino, which was a in a very beautiful church with lots of paintings, that was surprisingly big considering the size of the town, and whats more very full.

Other than the church, Selvino was very much a typical little mountain town in the style of buildings, and reminding me very much of a French ski village. Anyway, a picture's worth a thousand words, so rather than me writing thousands of words, here are some photos:

There are some more photos in my photo gallery that I haven't actually put in the entry.

After seeing Selvino, we took another, smaller funicular further up the mountain, to 1375m, to have lunch at a wonderful restaurant with 180 degree views from its glass walls. As there was a chocolate festival in Selvino, the menu was chocolate themed. I had cocoa gnocchi in a tomato and meat ragout - It was actually really nice!

Then, today I was taken by some other friends to visit Milan. Due to it being a Sunday and getting close to Christmas, everywhere was absolutely packed! I went and visited the Duomo, the Castello Sforzesco and the Arco della Pace, walked through some markets (they seemed to go on forever, we only did a fraction of them) and then looked around a few shops. The Duomo was absolutely stunning and inconceivably huge, although I was a bit creeped out by the fact that they had the embalmed bodies of a couple of bishops on display. I did enjoy the day, and enjoyed seeing the big tourist sites, although the whole thing was a bit stressful as everywhere was absolutely packed. Outside certain popular shops, there were long lines, as staff were having to only let a certain number of people in at a time.
